The taste of the Erlangen aroma garden

New edition of the FAU Aromatix Gin

For the 40th birthday of the aroma garden of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), the Botanical Garden, in cooperation with the relevant malting company Weyermann from Bamberg, created a very special London Dry Gin with 43% that takes in the diverse aromas of the garden of a high quality spirit.

After the first edition was sold out within a few days, there is now a new edition.

“The FAU Aromatix has an extremely strong regional character, as the botanicals were harvested by hand in our aroma garden, on whose dry soil they develop particularly intensive essential ingredients in full sun. At the same time, it embodies the cosmopolitanism that is associated with both the drink and our university, ”explains Claus Heuvemann, Technical Director of the Botanical Garden. The spirit was created exclusively for FAU in cooperation with the gin-savvy Bamberg malt house Weyermann with the collaboration of lavender expert Dr. Elke Puchtler creates. Weyermann is the world market leader for specialty malts and is known for its innovative products.

“The taste of FAU Aromatix Gin is characterized by a soft juniper aroma that plays with the combination of tart notes of angelica and alant and the summery flowers of lavender. Lemon components from the botanical garden also give the gin a pleasant freshness, ”says distillery manager Philipp Schwarz from Weyermann. The FAU Aromatix contains alant (Inula helenium), angelica (Angelica archangelica), sweet flag (Acorus calamus), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), milk thistle (Silybium marianum), peppermint (Mentha sp.), Sage (Salvia officinalis), thyme (thymus) vulgaris), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) and lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus). Immediately after the harvest, the flowers, leaves and roots for the production of the gin were lovingly washed by hand and dried in the shade for several days. "Our gin tastes good with and without tonic, with and without the addition of other botanicals such as cucumber, citrus zest or basil and rosemary," recommends gin connoisseur and FAU Vice President People Prof. Dr. Friedrich Paulsen and, as a doctor, admonishes conscious and moderate enjoyment at the same time.

"The name FAU Aromatix Gin creates a direct reference to the aromatic plants in our garden, the maintenance of which is supported with the sales proceeds," emphasizes Heuvemann. Paulsen adds: "The –X in the spelling indicates that we are a little bit different, more innovative and smarter, like the Gauls from the famous comic series - and just like our FAU."

Originally known as genever, the British-style Dutch juniper brandy is currently a popular fashion drink. Some of the botanicals contained in gin are also traditionally used as medicinal plants, for example juniper for urinary tract infections or lavender for restlessness. The high-quality pharmacy bottle of the FAU Aromatix Gin is a reminder of this.

The FAU Gin owes its creation to an exhibition that was on view in the entrance area of the greenhouses of the Botanical Garden from 2019 to 2020. For example, the colonial history was shown in a chapter. Based on the cinchona bark from South America, which gives the tonic water its characteristic bitter taste and has been used as an anti-malarial agent since the 16th century because of the antipyretic effect of the quinine it contains.

The sales price is 38 euros (including tax) for 0.5 liters of FAU Aromatix in a high-quality pharmacist bottle, the limited edition of which is numbered. The alcohol content is 43% by volume. A share of the proceeds goes to the aroma garden and its biodiversity of plants and animals.
